Once shunned as unworkable, environmentally sensitive agriculture is gaining respect. Exact definitions of organic, low-input, and sustainable agriculture are difficult to come by; but generally they involve chemical-free farming practices. Congress is now wrestling with the idea of writing organic farming standards into this year's farm bill. In the Low-Input Sustainable Agriculture Program (USDA/LISA) was created. The goal of the LISA competitive grants program was to develop and promote widespread adoption of more sustainable agricultural systems that would meet the food and fiber needs of the present while enhancing the ability of future generations to meet their needs and.

Initially called the Low-Input Sustainable Agriculture (LISA) program, SARE was authorized by Congress in the Food Security Act of (P.L. ) in response to widespread acknowledgment that science-based information was lacking for farmers seeking to reduce chemical use in crop production. The LISA program got started with a $ million. Agriculture and nature conservation. Reducing soil phosphorus; Flourishing Farm; Agroforestry. Agforward: Agroforestry in Europe; Plant breeding. As suggested in two publications released by the Soil and Water Conservation Society (Edwards et al.,Schnepf, ), “low-input agriculture” is an concept that stems from Rachel Carson’s publication of Silent Spring, the s energy crisis, or as counter to the “Green Revolution.”.

Sustainability through Farming Systems. Two farming systems have been proposed for enduring sustainability. They are: Low external input sustainable Agriculture or Low input sustainable Agriculture (LEISA/LISA) It means Minimal use of external production inputs.

Organic arable agriculture typically requires more drought resistance systems with higher soil organic matter and more biodiversity. The organic system forces the community to create resilient systems while boosting production, in that sense aiming for sustainable intensification, as is the case in conventional systems (e.g.
